Bakery Permanently Closes After 88 Years
A line of mourners that lasted six hours and extended at times outside the funeral home is a tribute not only to a man but to an institution called Tuzik’s Bakery.
Doughnuts, sweet rolls, cakes, cookies, apple slices, paczki, Easter Lambs and freshly baked bread were more than just some of the delicious choices available; they were a way of life for countless customers. Going to “Tuzik’s” was a special treat. Something to look forward to. For some it was a weekly if not a daily experience; bringing happiness to the kitchen table and delight to the senses. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other occasions won’t be the same.

Started in 1931 by Polish immigrants, 3rd generation Theodore “Ted” Tuzik along with his business partner and brother-in-law, Bill Love, continued this American neighborhood tradition of “going to the bakery.” But because not everyone is replaceable; not wanting to chance tarnishing the product quality reputation by selling the business; with sincere gratitude to the “family” of customers; a decision was made to permanently close the business. I will miss my friend, Ted; and I will miss eating the best chocolate doughnuts I ever had as well. Sad to say, I feel as if a part of America has died, too.
